About the Artwork

1965 Monterey Jazz Festival

The 1965 Poster of “Dizzy For President” was created by Carmel-based cartoonist Eldon Dedini, whose work appeared in Esquire, The New Yorker, and Playboy for decades. Dedini was a part of a group of Monterey artists and writers (including John Steinbeck) who would convene at Ed Ricketts’ lab on Cannery Row, and “study wine, jazz and philosophy." That year Recorded Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival would become John Handy’s most famous album. The festival featured Armstrong, Gillespie and Ellington, as well as Earl “Fatha” Hines, Anita O’Day, and the MJF commission from pianist Mary Lou Williams, Saint Martin Des Porres.
