Why do reading glasses scratch?

Bet you thought your reading glasses were made from glass right? WRONG! In the 21st century we decided that having actual glass on our face felt heavy and cumbersome. And it turns out that glass breaks!

Luckily, in the 1970’s poly-carbonate was developed for use in aerospace applications. Poly-carbonate was integrated into reading glasses in the 1980’s to create lightweight, impact-resistant lenses and has become the standard material used in all reading glasses.

But here’s the rub. You shouldn’t RUB poly-carbonate. Although poly-carbonate provides us much more safety due to its impact-resistance, it’a also a soft surface that is prone to scratching. Even more expensive glasses that come with a scratch-proof coating on the lenses is prone to scratching due to intense rubbing. Rubbing with a cloth is effectively like rubbing sandpaper over your lenses. Why? Because that cloth is full of dust particles. Each particle acts like a grit in sandpaper when rubbed across your lens.

Why not use vinegar, ammonia, or bleach to clean your lenses? Because if your lens does come with any kind of coating, these agents will strip your lens of its protective coating layer.
